Every Tree Counts Mini-Grant

The Town of Ocean City, in conjunction with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, is excited to announce the new Every Tree Counts mini-grant, providing residents of Ocean City with a $100 voucher for applicants to plant a tree selected from the Town’s Plant List. Trees provide natural habitat for animals and pollinators, which is essential in an urban area like Ocean City. Natural shade from trees reduces hot temperatures in summer, provides shaded areas for recreation, and can even reduce your home’s energy consumption. Trees also improve water quality, filtering pollutants out of water and absorbing excess stormwater runoff. Mature trees can intercept several thousand gallons of stormwater every year! Their deep root systems and leaf litter work to keep sediment in place, curbing soil erosion. These tactics help protect the ocean and bay that surround Ocean City and allow our town to thrive. Our Every Tree Counts program also emphasizes trees that are native to Maryland’s coastal region. Native trees are more adapted to our unique environment and better at resisting disease and insects—meaning less maintenance and less watering for us! The best time to plant new trees is in late fall, into early winter, and in the spring. The Town of Ocean City’s Environmental Programs & Green Team are happy to provide additional assistance in determining when to plant, what species to use, or any other questions you may have. Funding for this project was awarded to the Town of Ocean City by a grant from the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. Applicants must be residents or residential property owners within the corporate limits of Ocean City. Limited quantities are available for reimbursement. The deadline for applications is November 15th.
