The Town of Ocean City, along with volunteers from the Braemar Towers Condominium and students from Stephen Decatur High School, planted over 3,300 dune grasses in a secondary dune near 131ST Street. This area, owned by the Town, was previously covered with invasive bamboo, which was removed by Public Works staff last year and further spot treated by Recreation and Parks staff. Students also completed a beach cleanup during the event. The planting was funded with Critical Area fee in lieu funds that are paid by developers when certain site restrictions are present, preventing the developer from installing plantings. The dune system is comprised of both primary and secondary dunes, both of which area crucial for coastal protection and providing natural barriers against storms.
